National Wellness Month

August is National Wellness Month. It serves as an opportunity for all of us to reset and refocus on self-care, stress management, and healthy habits throughout the month (and yearlong).

Exercise professionals are group exercise instructors, personal trainers, exercise physiologists, and strength and conditioning coaches. They provide fitness instruction and coaching to individuals or groups, and increasingly, exercise professionals help clients optimize their health and wellness through a holistic approach.

Lifestyle medicine is an evidence-based holistic approach to health and wellness that supports preventing, treating, and reversing chronic disease. There are six pillars of lifestyle medicine—nutrition (whole food, plant-predominant eating pattern), physical activity, restorative sleep, stress management, avoidance of risky substances, and positive social connections.

Registered exercise professionals can help clients pursue a holistic approach to health and wellness by supporting:

  1. Goal setting that is intentional about incorporating physical activity in addition to other pillars of lifestyle medicine.
  2. Health behavior changes that are sustainable over time.
  3. Collaborative relationships with clients, healthcare providers, and allied health professionals with expertise in other pillars of lifestyle medicine.
